New Media Server

My old one is well over a decade old, and I inherited a five year old desktop from a family member moving to laptop life.

It has a Gigabyte motherboard, and I was stuck updating the BIOS because I really resisted opening the case to check the board revision number. And then I had a “c” version of the BIOS, but I didn’t see it on their page, so I wasn’t sure what version to go to. tried the newest, but it didn’t want it. had to go to the intermediate version first.

It took forever, but I decided on Debian + kde because I have been enjoying Kubuntu but I hate Snap and remove it first thing after OS install. I have just got the OS on, so I’m not yet sure if there is going to be anything *buntu related that I’ll miss out on.

I found out: To connect to to the machine’s xRDP server (after installing it), the client must have a username and password specified or you’ll get a weird greeter. And the user cannot already be logged in locally or you’ll get a useless black void of a desktop. How can I remotely log out the local user? It’d be nice if it asked you whether you wanted that.

Next is adding other users to the xRDP group.

Also permanently mounting? the two internal drives to the file system.

I’m probably going to use Jellyfin instead of Plex (even though I have a lifetime pass) because of continual enshittification.

(more to come)
